VPOD: Vintage of Tomorrow
When people meet me for the first time, they inevitably expect me to be wearing head-to-toe vintage. And they are always disappointed. Seldom does head-to-toe vintage work well. Instead, I pepper my outfits with vintage: a blouse or blazer here, a cuff bracelet or vintage belt there. And while I love my super-flattering pair of Jordache jeans from the 1970s I also wear Seven for All Mankind. This weekend, I sported a pair of black-and-fire-engine-red vintage pumps with a very contemporary dress.Yet even when I buy contemporary clothes, I've got vintage on my mind: the vintage of tomorrow. I'm always asking myself, Is this something I'd like to pass on to my granddaughter someday? (And no I'm not a grandmother yet!) But it's a way to test whether I think something is timeless.
And if I'm going to buy timeless, well-designed, contemporary pieces, I prefer to pay bargain prices. So I thought I'd share one of my secret sources. Gilt.com offers luxury lifestyle brands at sample sale prices. Sales last only one day each (today's features Diane von Furstenberg)and are available to members only, but there's no fee to register. And once you register you'll have access to the fabulous short videos that the Gilt team puts together to introduce each designer and brand. They're a great way to spend your coffee break!
And Gilt is a great way to acquire the vintage of tomorrow for today's vintage fashionistas!

Mary,
I am so happy you brought this up. I also rarely wear head to toe vintage. About 10 years ago, you would rarely find me in any other vintage other than frocks from the 40s and 50s. As I grow older, and my style evolves, I find costumey isn't what I am going for.
Thank you for sharing your future vintage picks. I absolutely love Alexis Bittar. Like you, I also always have vintage on the mind so anything that is stunning and rooted in classic design is always a winner.
Mary,
I agree with your tastes in mixing contemporary and vintage fashion. Not only is this a fun way to integrate the styles of the decades with today, but it is easy to do! I've found the website MonsterVintage.com to be helpful, as the site provides vintage fashion from all eras, as well as more contemporary pieces. Furthermore, the content is so varied I can always find something I like.
Thanks for all your suggestions and tips on vintage style!
